LO2- Understanding the skills needed to carry out a chosen media production
LO1- P2
The job role I have chosen to talk about is cameraman
In the this job roles communication is very important between the production team.
Written communication is important as then the evidence of you saying this is logged. Through out 6 form I have made 2 trailers and 1 documentary. In the production of the first trailer I made, which was Counting Cards I was lead cameraman so I had the responsibility of making sure the footage was captured. With this I had too know what shots too take so the director (Ellis) sent me a shot list.
Shot list
This shot list was written communication so I know how long I need each shot need to be and what I will need to film but also the angle I will shoot. Another type of written communication was story boards as this gave me more detail on what to do the story boards provided me with an image.
This has been done for both trailers I have made also for the documentary as it is a skill needed for the job role. Through out the whole production communication has a big part to play in the success of the film this is because with out it the team will have no clue on what to do. This is the reason why in my second trailer about Tang Soo Do as the cameraman I had to have great connection with another cameraman which agreed to film with a second camera.
This is verbal communication and evidence of me filming with the camera.
The verbal communication mostly was done over phone calls and when in the production as then the small production team knew what we were doing.
As a cameraman I had to take risk to have the results of great angles and shots. Over the two trailers I have filmed many scene but with the documentary it took many cameras. So I had to hire a second person as I was acting director. But with the cameraman role I had to make sure the camera was stable through out and positioned correctly.
Evidence
The skills I had to have while making the trailer and documentary are:
Communication with all the team
Use of the equipment which was pretty easy as it was just a DSLR with tripod and mic
Attendance.
Stabilized hand.
Knowledge of the scene and what we want it to look like.
Correct timing.
Ability to get the correct angle
Creativity
The creativity of a cameraman is how you could film in certain positions and how to get the best angle for filming. For example climbing that roof was dangerous but to get the creative angle was the best thing too do. My self as the cameraman I like to think about how I can capture the light differently so for example with the production of counting I had an idea using lights to reflect into Lewis the actor. Another one is to use the tram as a form of disappearing.
This is all the creativity moment that I filmed.
As the character is a drug addict we tried to replicate the feeling that he would be in when taken drugs and showing that he has two sides of him.

When producing the film trailer and the documentary I have experienced many skills as a camera man. I am now able to film with fluidity when filming a scene so when the actor is playing their role the camera movement is smooth which makes the production better. I have done this through out the production of my documentary because I wanted the best for the representation of Tang Soo Do. Sometimes I would be filming with tripod to get a secure shot but sometimes I would just hold it so then I can change my movement quickly or change positions. Another skill I am able to do is have communication with people who are in my work business and able to talk to them about the production My creative mind set helps me think out the box to create interesting content for the viewers. I have determination to get things filmed even in some awkward situations for example when I had trouble with the weather I was able to protect the equipment and still film the scene the only problem is that the whether was different from the start so then I decided to film the start again and my team actually liked it more. I was able to communicate with the team as I had a phone to ring if we need to change anything or if there was a problem. I have many years of experience with the cameras which meant when filming I was able to get the best quality. one potential gap in my skills as a camera man is the wide range of connections which can help in the production of a film also the my availability is good so the company working with me has no problems with my attendance.

Looking through all of my previous projects and seeing where I can develop my skills. If I do make a trailer or a short film I need to reflect back to the old ones and see if I can improve my role with in a company. Looking at the way I have got communication I would like to see if I can make a group with all the production team in also makes sure next time a get all phone numbers so I can contact anybody in the production. My communication is vital for the company and with me taking the development on board I can get along with the company better and understand my role even more as I will receive even more information. My knowledge of equipment improves every time I go filming but I only film with low budget equipment and for me to develop my job role I will need to learn how to use bigger and higher cost equipment, this is so companies can trust me using there expensive equipment and I know how to capture scenes with confidence. practically my skills can be developed but mainly its just me learning how to use the best equipment in the business. My movement can also be improved as the use of stabilizes for the camera so then any shake in my hand can be avoided. I would say my creative skills are pretty high due to my imaginations but in some aspects of the way I show how I made the creative pieces isn't the best such as the tram bit as you can see my reflection in the tram but with a tripod I am able to get that perfected. Another creative moment I could develop is the way I filmed my mate in the mirror the best thing I could of done is change and effect of illusion with movement of the camera when he is in the mirror.

This is me filming for some of the scenes for counting cards. I had to get to a high place to capture the correct shots.
