LO1- Task 2 Analyse two roles within a media production
TASK 2
The two roles I will be comparing are cameraman and editor because I would say that these two jobs are equally important.
Cameraman has the responsibility to film the scene and get the correct movement for the actors and make sure all the angles are correct. The cameraman has to make sure all the equipment is set up so the director can tell them where to go with the camera. The cameraman needs to stay calm through out filming because the camera will shake if they do. The fluidity of the movement is very important because it plays a big part in the quality of the whole film. An editor has the responsibility to put the jigsaw puzzle together and will be putting the audio into the scenes to make it come alive. The editor will have to work hours and hours just to find the perfect scene for that part as the production team gives him all the footage. The editor will need to look back at the story boards and put the scenes in that order but if correctly done the production team would have all the footage organized so it wont take long for the editor to find it. The editor will have to sit down with the director a lot as the director is the only one who knows what they want to film to look like so he/she will have great connections with the director. Looking at the editor and the cameraman they both have a very big pert to play. If the cameraman wasn't there the editor cannot do the work. Cameraman will have to keep looking at the storyboards because then they have an idea what the director wants but the director will have to tell them the movement because the director look into the storyboards in more detail.
In the process of the production the cameraman will have to use a lot of equipment and most likely will have the most equipment to set up out of all the job roles. For example the cameraman has a tripod and this can come in many sizes as they range from really small to huge this is also depending on the size of the camera but the tripod is very important because it can control how level the camera is and if the camera needs to move. The camera is a very important piece of equipment because that is what captures the scene. Cameras can range from small prizes of £500 to the thousands depending on the quality. For example the camera the Marvel studios may use must be the most expensive as they need the best quality. The Cameras will need to move so when the scene may have a action scene or needing the camera to rotate the cameraman will most likely have a stabilizer so then it keeps the camera straight and these pieces of equipment can be as expensive as the camera. Depending on the company and how much they have to spend, the quality of the camera will change but also if you get an experienced camera man it can make a difference this is also the same with the editor but with the editor the equipment they need is editing software for example premiere or maybe software with more editing techniques. The editor will also need the necessary equipment like a computer, mouse and keyboard. The editing equipment isn't as expensive as the camera equipment but the editor will probably use it more.
The skill needed to become an editor is a great eye on how the scenes to fit together also how to change to sound effects this is very important to get the sound correct and how to cut the scenes up at the correct moment. The most important skill out them all is the determination you have to not get board of editing the same part over and over again because the long process can get repetitive. Another skill needed for editing is to be able to do creative skits and be able to take advice from the director and have great connection with most staff. The skills needed for a cameraman can be complicated depending on the amount of equipment they will be using for example if you are on a big set they will need to learn how to use that big camera as every camera is different in one way or another. A skill that is key is the acknowledgment of positioning as they will need to know where to move and when if filming. They need to be smooth with the movement of the camera to get the best quality also the skill what is most needed is to be quick at setting up so then the production of the film can be faster but need to do checks before start.
Compare
Looking at the both job roles they are completely different as the editor is always sat down and in a studio with no one interrupting them but with a cameraman it is more active because they are always moving around and when on set there are always people around them which makes a busy atmosphere. The camera man has to learn more as the equipment may be new to them but the editor has most likely used that software for along time but the cameraman will have less time on the production then the editor because editing is the longest part of the film. The cameraman will be meeting more people as he is on set and this is important because it provides great connections for the future but the editor needs to do a great job at making the film for him to get recognized. The editor will have better connection with the director then the cameraman as the only thing the director says to the cameraman is what to do on set but with the editor the director will tell the editor what to do and the editor may say it will look better this way or give more than one option. The cameraman will get paid less then the editor as the editor will have to put more time into the film in average a cameraman earns £30,000 but the editor gets 60,000 which surprised me but this also depends on the company they are working for but in all cases the editor may get more money. The cameraman will need to have set schedule so he has to be up earlier to get on set, this is important so the production will not fall back but with the editor he can pick what hours he wants in the day but needs make sure he meets the deadlines this important as the director. The similarities of a editor and cameraman is that they both work closely with the director because one is on set and one is in a studio which the director will visit. Another similarity is that they both spend hours and hours on the production but also the equipment they use can be equally priced as some computer go to the price of cameras. They both review the footage even if its raw or edited.
