LO1- Task 1 Understanding job roles
TASK 1
The sector I have chosen to focus on is film as I currently have experience with in this sector.
Job roles in Film
Cameraman - The cameraman is the person who captures the birth of the film. The cameraman will be there from day 1 of production, setting up camera angle by looking at the story boards and taking instructions from the director. In a big budget film the set may have 4 to 5 camera men all with different angle and shots. The heavy duty camera equipment that they will use may actually need assistants which means more people on set for filming. The cameraman will take instruction when to move. They are responsible for the timing of the scenes and the fluidity of the camera. The boom boy is the cameraman's closest team mate and the boom boy will move where ever the actors are.
Director - The Director is the biggest and the most stressful role in the production as he is a in charge of all job roles. The director need to make sure all the people who are in the production will do there jobs correctly. Make sure the scene starts and finishes in time. They will make sure the whole production runs smoothly like the storyboards. The responsibility of making sure the camera is rolling and audio is captured. The Director will be the one person who decides what happens on set and if the technicians have set out the props and lighting equipment correctly.
Accountants - Accountants are the people who do all the paper work for the company and make sure all the budgets are correct so then the production can afford the set design. They also sort out the payments for the other job roles so every one gets paid. The responsibility of budgeting is very important as if they can't afford certain areas the film will drop quality also so the director doesn't get told of for going out of the budget presented to him.
Actor - A actor is key to success for the company as they are the only faces in the production that will be on screen. The actor has a large responsibility to be make revenue. They are there to bring the script to life. The actor will need to know how to be prepared in all scenes and focus just on that one specific character. In other words that actor needs to turn into someone else for the period that they are on screen. Actors will usually work across television, theatre and radio each type of platform requires specific. Maybe some actors will be the voice of animations.
Technician - Lighting- product placement - The technician plays a very key role in the production
of the film as they will be relied on to make sure all props and lighting is correctly done. The placement is key so then the scene will look like the director wants. Actually to technicians are equally as important as the camera man as they will make the set possible.
Set Designers - The set designer is the one who tells the technicians where to put things and what they want the scene to look like. This is important because they are the ones who keep the genre through out the locations the same. The set designer has the responsibility to keep the area to what the director wants to see.
Art Department- Director of art - These are the creative people who make the weird and wonderful happen. The art department can make the set look like it actually suits that genre. For example in marvel films when they are on different planets the art department make the set like that to match the genre and keep the consistency of the film flowing.
Armourer - The Armourer makes sure if the production has weapons in the actors use them safely and they also teach how to fight in that scene. One film I really like is Rush Hour and in that film the scene have fighting which will most likely need someone to teach the actors. The other option that the film company can approach is the stuntmen which is also a role that can be in production.
Editors - The editor is the jigsaw puzzle solver as he puts all the footage together to make the final product but the editor doesn't just put the scenes together they also put SFX in which creates the film to have a better atmosphere. The audio is also put in so then the story can form together. The editor has a big responsibility because if the film is put together and doesn't look that good then he may have to do it again and again. In the film business they have many moments of deleting footage from the edit to get the perfect final cut.
Construction Manger - This person will have to make sure the location is safe to film. The construction may even have good connection with the set designer as they will need to communicate to place big structures up for certain scenes.
Hair and Makeup Artist - These people make sure the actors look perfect for the scene they are going to play. In the production of the film 6 to 10 artist are hired so then they can cover the hours they are filming also these people have a large part towards the consistency because the actors need to look the same through out scenes.
Location Manager - This person is really important because they manage to find the location where the production of the film will be captured. They check if the location is safe but also right for the scene. These people will do the most traveling and have connection with the director to keep him updated but he doesn't stay in the production as soon as they get the location this person will not be used anymore unless a back up location is needed.
Buyers - These people literally go on a spending spree to secure the props needed to film but they have great connection with set design has he is literally given a budget and a list to find the items.
Script Writers - It all start with audio this is why this person is probably most important but also makes the film become alive on paper. The responsibility of this person is high because the audio need to appeal to the target audience and genre. The script will be edited for along time before the production of the film but even when the production starts it may change depending on how the actor feels about the script.
Boom Operator - This person captures all the audio from the actors voice. Usually the cameraman and the boom operator are best friends because they spend most of the day following the actors for the scenes. This boom operator will most likely make sure that the audio is on so then no audio is missing.
Casting Director - This guy is like the locations guys but for actors. This person has a large role to play as he is the one to say who may act in the film and will suit the genre of the film. He has great connection with the director as he finds the cast what the director is looking for. The process is usually long because of the amount of interviews and auditions the actor will have to go through. This is so the director will find the perfect actors for this film.
Costume Designer - This costume designer has a big part to play as they are ones to keep the genre the same all the way through the film also to give the actors the finest look all the way through the film. These usually are in the same department as the make up artist because they will need to communicate to make sure the actor looks perfect for the scene.
Post Production supervisor - This person is in charge of what happens when all the filming is done so it includes the campaign to advertise the film and the editing afterwards but the most important thing is that they need to make sure they keep the house style the same to match the genre. In the post production it produces all the revenue for the company.
